Are Ginger capsules helpfull for IBS / Colitis?

Question:

What is Gluten, and what things is it found in. Is there an easy way to locate it in foods. I am in so much pain, I am missing time from work. I am willing to try anything – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I still find I am sensitive to other things, ie green vegetables, > tomatoes and spices. But the symptoms are nowhere near as bad as with > gluten.

Response:

Gluten is found in wheat (as in wheat gluten) and also a few other grains, but wheat contains the most and wheat gluten is most often what causes people problems. Also wheat is put in many things including things such as soybean oil you get at Chinese restaurants so you have to be careful and read labels. Many people are allergic to gluten and should avoid wheat. Regards, Jeff 2

Let me tell you something about ginger, it is great for settling your stomach, but can wreak havoc on your coagulants, and your ability to clot.  I had a massive flare, drank tons of ginger tea to settle it and almost bled to death.  It was so serious my colon had to come completely out, and it took three days for the bleeding to stop in my small bowel as well.  If you use it, do it in small amounts.   – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I have cd and have nausea and vomiting often.  This is from the cd and >from Methotrexate.  Ginger tea is helpfull and actually sucking on a >peace of ginger helps me also.  When you make the tea boil a whole >ginger root.

Ginger is good for a lot of things but I don’t think colitis is one of them. With colitis your intestines are inflammed and raw. Ginger can aggravate that in many cases I believe. I have colitis and try to reduce or minimize any hot spices, acidic foods, alcohol, and coffee. These irritate an already inflammed situation. Perhaps in small amounts it can help. Ginger ale helps settle an upset stomach for many but ginger capsules I think would be too much. Try taking chlorophyll. It is a powerful intestinal cleaner and detoxifier. I take Chlorella tablets which have the highest amount of chloropyll of any plant. I believe that it also helps to nutrilize excess acid which I believe is a factor for some people. Ginger tends to be acidic so it could make things worse. But you can always do your own experimenting and you might be different. Especially if you’ve been taking or eating lots of ginger as a normal part of your diet. Regards, Jeff 2

ginger is used for nausea and vomiting. Ginger ale can do the trick. Peppermint oil is used for gut cramps. (You’re supposed to find oil-containing pills that don’t break down in the stomach before reaching the small intestine. Look for "enteric coated" pills.)

Enteric-coated Peppermint capsules are what you’d really want to look for.  The enteric coating allows the capsule to pass from the stomach into the intestines without completely digesting.  They’re relatively inexpensive too.  I have some and use them on rough days – it helps. Just my $.02… Aaron

If you have CD, do you exclude gluten from your diet? I have found nearly all my symptoms disappeared once I eliminated it. I still find I am sensitive to other things, ie green vegetables, tomatoes and spices. But the symptoms are nowhere near as bad as with gluten.

Hi, Sanjay.  I don’t know if ginger capsules are helpful specifically for colitis, but what I can tell you is that they are immensely helpful for nausea (at least two capsules for an adult), and that ginger has distinct anti-inflammatory properties, and in that regard I’ve read that they can be helpful for the IB diseases. Response:

Hey Jay, For some reason, ginger makes me bleed worse.  It is an anticoagulant, so maybe that’s why.  so, be careful. One supplement to look into is bromelain (and possible papain), these are enzymes from the papaya plant and they have some pretty good antiinflammatory activity.  They make my heart race, so I can’t take them too often, but my colon usually feels much better after taking them. I did feel any different when I took ginger. I was able to get away from Drs, their drugs and 90% of the suffering by taking quality multi-enzymes.
