Thanks for your help. I am due in a few days and still am undecided as to breast or bottle. This is baby #4 but I never had Colitis when I had the first 3. SO Who knows. Thanks again for your input Cheryl

<<Is there any risks to the baby if I am breast feeding while taking Asacol ?>> Well, I am nursing my third child while taking Asacol, and all three children are very healthy.  I nursed each of my sons to age three and a half (yes, that’s years); they are twenty-six months apart so I nursed #1 all the way through my second pregnancy and then tandem nursed for 17 months before my oldest son weaned.  My four-month-old daughter is completely breastfed and I plan to let her nurse long-term as well.  I have been on six Asacol a day since 1993, and my children were born in ‘95, ‘97 and ‘01.  My pediatrician, who is married to a GI, assured me when I was pregnant with my first that not only was Asacol OK for nursing, prednisone would be too.  Asacol is said to be mostly topical in action; not much gets into your bloodstream.  Thankfully I have not had to go back on pred. There are also risks involved in formula feeding which in my opinion outweigh any hypothetical risk of nursing with Asacol.  I have read that breastfeeding reduces a baby’s risk of developing IBD later on–of course, nothing can completely eliminate the risk of developing IBD but given my children’s unfortunate genetic heritage, I take comfort in knowing that I am doing what I can to lower their risk of this horrible disease.  Breastfeeding also supplies a baby with immunities not present in formula. If you want to research more fully what medications are OK in breastfeeding, a good place to start is La Leche League. Here’s an article from their magazine: http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBMarApr00p55.html Hope this is helpful information to you. Mary Ellen

It is known that Mesalamine(asacol) may pass into breast milk but supposedly it causes no problems in the nursing infant. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Is there any risks to the baby if I am breast feeding while taking > Asacol ? > Cheryl
