Early Menopause/ibd

Question:

Nikki- We certainly have missed you around here.  I’m very sorry to hear about your baby. I’m very glad to hear that you have someone in your life now.  So when life shuts a door, it usually opens a window. Hope to hear from you more on the ng.  Try your best to keep your stress levels down, if possible, that may help! Be well- Tracy CD class of ‘98 my homepage: http://home.talkcity.com/ParadiseDr/goodboie/index.html  : )  smile – it makes people wonder what you’re up to!

Response:

Nikki: Glad to hear you are finally happy — you deserve it! I can’t help you with the early menopause question as my periods are just the opposite — getting longer and longer and heavier. . . (ugh!). I will discuss this all with my doc when I see him this winter. Rebecca :-)

Wow.  This is interesting.  My mother had early menopause in her mid thirties. I’ve been having the early symptoms for a while.  But always just blamed her. ha ha ha   Staci

Thanks to everyone who replied to my message – I’ve been checking the ng for the past couple of days and my server only gave me one reply, so I just checked with Deja News and found loads more. Many thanks for all the kind words re the baby and the breakdown of my marriage. I still grieve for my baby and I always will but at the age of 41 it would have been very difficult for me, I work full time as a teacher and the father had abandoned me (not my husband, I’m ashamed to say!).  My marriage had been finished for a good while and then I met someone on the net – he contributes to this ng – and he was the father, a highly unsuitable relationship as he’s 12 yrs younger than me! I’m now happier than I’ve ever been in my life. I have a new partner who loves me like I’ve never been loved before.  A year ago I thought my life had ended when I was abandoned by the 29yr old I adored.  But I survived and life has never been better. Re the menopause.  After reading the responses I’m becoming more and more convinced that the auto-immune reaction has a part to play.  Sue, I have been on Pred on and off over the years – longest amount of time was 6 months.  I also think poor diet is a contributory factor.  Mary Jo – hi!  I forgot to say that my very last period was very heavy and very long – about 3-4 weeks.  I think that was the remainder of my eggs going all in one go! I guess stress could also have been a part of it. Nikki

Have you ever been on prednisone?  I think a history of taking lots of pred can cause this too. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Hi All, >Apologies if this topic has been discussed before but I haven’t been around >in a while.  I’m just wondering if anyone else is/has experienced an early >menopause?  It’s been quite a year for me – got pregnant around October last >year – much to my surprise as my periods had been very erratic.  Sadly I >lost the baby in the New Year.  I left my husband around that time and had a >couple of very scant periods after that and have had none since.  Saw my >doctor a couple of weeks ago, had a blood test which shows my hormonal level >to be post- menopausal! According to the site www.prematuremenopause.com autoimmune diseases cause 2/3 of all cases of premature ovarian failure. Says the bodys immune system attacks the ovarian tissue. I’m liking this colitis business  less & less… Linda -the lurker

After 26 years of it, I don’t think I could like it any less! Libby

I’m sorry also to hear you lost your baby and left your husband.  I had to have surgery when I was 30 and had a total hysterectomy.  So I definitely had early menopause but surgically induced because of CD.  I’m not exactly sure how it caused it but my ovaries were the size of grapefruits.  Since I had already been told I couldn’t get pregnant, it was OK except for the immediate effects of menopause. bowel disease depletes nutrients from drugs you take for it and/or you suffer malnutiriton and malabsorption and don’t get enough nutrients in your diet, experiencing nutrient deficiencies of most likely the B’s, essential fatty acids, sterols, sterolins, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E,C, and soy needed to prevent pre menopausal symptoms. What you can do to help yourselves to balance the hormonal systems is to get the nutrition that will do so. I’m taking an herbal/nutrient supplement that balances all body systems, hormones, which contains chinese herbs, essential fatty acids, soy, soil based organisms,….to keep it short, is keeping me in remission and preventing me from experiencing female premenopause. Balance of body systems, organs, hormones and body functions, can be achieved through nutritional support. Anyone open for more education,(not supplements to sell you) email will be answered. Hi Nikki,  I too am sorry to hear that you lost your baby , and leaving your husband.. In regard to your question concerning early menopause , I’ll tell you about me, in 1977 when I was 17 yrs old I was diagnosed with uc , I had emergency surgery done resulting in a ileostomy , during the surgery my right ovary was removed because it was the size of a grapefruit (begnin),   I still  have my left ovary .  I started menopause when I was around 37 yrs old , something like Linda describes , my gyn didn’t think it was menopause , but with time the blood work says it’s menopause. Is it related to auto immune diseases ? the doctors aren’t saying.     sincerely lydia – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi Nikki. Nikki: I am 52 with CD.  I had a hysterectomy at 39 due to perforation of my intestines all over my tube and ovary on right side.  Went ahead and did a complete hys while they were at it, which was fine with me as I always had ssooooo much bleeding during my periods.  Other than the leaky intestines, I don’t know whether CD played a part or not but I am "still" in menopause!!!! I’m on a hormone that tries to keep up with the night sweats that won’t leave me alone.  I don’t know if this info can help you or not, just another’s experience. I am so terrible sorry about your baby and your marriage.  My best to you, take care,     Linda  (there seems to be two of us now!)

Hi All, Apologies if this topic has been discussed before but I haven’t been around in a while.  I’m just wondering if anyone else is/has experienced an early menopause?  It’s been quite a year for me – got pregnant around October last year – much to my surprise as my periods had been very erratic.  Sadly I lost the baby in the New Year.  I left my husband around that time and had a couple of very scant periods after that and have had none since.  Saw my doctor a couple of weeks ago, had a blood test which shows my hormonal level to be post- menopausal! I’m 41, my Mum started her menopause when she was 55 so I thought I had ages to go yet. Anyway, my GP tells me that it’s more than likely linked to the Crohns with no further explanation. Was reading today that early menopause can be something to do with the auto immune system and the antibodies attacking the ovaries – not sure if that’s absolutely correct, so I’m hoping that some of you out there will understand it better than me.  I seem to remember that the same sort of thing happens with IBD which has made me think there must be a link. Any comments gratefully received, Nikki
