BCIR – Anyone have info on this surgical procedure for UC????

Question:

Hi Lisa – I don’t know anything about the surgery you mentioned, but I will (hopefully) be having J-Pouch surgery for my colitis soon. They remove your entire large intestine and make an internal  pouch out of a section of your small intestine. You need to wear a "bag" for approx. 3-4 months while the pouch heals, then they disconnect the bag and hook up the internal pouch. If you want more info. check out this website: J-Pouch.org Have a great day – Tammy

Hi all: Has anyone done research on…or had the BCIR procedure….know someone with the BCIR…etc? It is ther Barnett Continet Internal Reservoir surgery in which the person who has the colon removed receives a small incision in the lower abdomen from which they drain stool several times per day with a catheter. There is no bag or external applicance to wear. It is hard to find info on this procedure as only a few hospitals perform it. The CCFA does not seem to support it nor is it performed in a ny of the major GI hospitals. Thanks. Lisa

Lisa, I had the BCIR done a year ago for my UC.  I had UC for 16 years. I am happy with my BCIR!  It is the best thing that I ever did!!! I am willing to share anyting with you.  You can email me with any questions.  I have been so blessed to have found this and had this done, and I am willing to share with anyone that is interested in the procedure. I did ALOT of research on this before making it my decision.
