Q: How long does surgery take?
Question:
Beth, that’s something that you should asked her Dr. As with every person and every surgery they’re all different. — Take Care, Sherry :o)
Haven’t been able to bring myself to ask the docs yet, so please will someone tell me how long is the operation? More than 2 hours ?? I really need to know . Sorry, the op I mean is a large bowel removal and stoma bag fitted. Thanks, Beth xxx

I am leaning towards having the J-Pouch surgery done soon, but will not make my final decision until after my visit to the Mayo Clinic on January 21st. My regular GI thinks I am a good candidate. He says that most people (after they heal) wish they had done it sooner. I know this topic has been discussed a milion times, but could we make it a million and one? Would any of you mind discussing the surgery, what went into your decision, where it was done, how the recovery was, would you recommend it, etc… BTW, I have pan-colitis. I was diagnosed 10 years ago with left-side colitis. I have been batteling a flare-up for the past 6 months or so. I was also hospitalized last week and am now on Flagyl for C.Diff. I want my life back. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I had my jpouch done at Cleveland Clinic. I went in at 8 am, had the >epidermal put in and I was done in post-op by 1pm. Hi, Beth — Two surgeons removed my colon, removed the mucosal lining from my rectal cuff, constructed a J-pouch, and gave me a temporary ileostomy in 3 1/2 hours of "open" (non-laparoscopic) surgery. I’m thin and had "excellent tissue planes," so it was pretty straightforward. I’m told that just doing an ileostomy is quicker. But as others have said, ask your surgeon how long he/she would expect it to be in your case. Beth, The length of surgery will always depend on the patient’s health and the amount of damage that may need repair. It is best to discuss this w/ your surgeon.

It can take up to 4-6 hours depending on what they find and how smootly things go. My colectomy and ileostomy took 5 hours but I was hemmorahging at the time. She will be in much better shape than I was so everything should go smoothly. It is the best decision you could have made. Good luck.

I had a j-pouch done this summer. Part I, the removal of the colon and creation of the j-pouch, was 6 hours long. It would have been done faster if it wasn’t lapriscopic. I think part two was much faster (the takedown). -Joclyn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Haven’t been able to bring myself to ask the docs yet, so please will > someone tell me how long is the operation?
