Wow… what a horrible experience to go through!!  I hope your life has settled down somewhat now and you’re all healed up.  Take care. Jan…

Response:

Hi Jeff, I definitely think that stress can contribute to a flare up.  Back in October of 1995 my family went through the stress of losing our house because of a propane explosion. There were five of us in the house at the time – my wife, my daughter, my sister and her daughter and myself.  Miraculously, no one was seriously injured.  With the combined stress of losing our house and belongings, personal injuries, pending lawsuit and dealing with insurance to account for our losses and rebuilding our house, I had my first major flare up of my newly diagnosed Ulcerative colitits.  I was hospitalised, and finally things improved.  Unfortunately the stress didn’t go away and I had my final flare up that didn’t completely go away.  I was released from the hospital a second time, but was re-admitted a couple of months later.  I didn’t respond to Prednisone and ended up having surgery to remove my colon. I believe that had I not had any stress, I probably would have ended in the same situation, but not nearly as soon. Hi Andy, I liked what you said george Carlin said. That’s great!  I’m probably the most stressd out person on the planet. Yes I do think stress does play a part in our disease.. although more of a side bar so to speak.  I think stress contributed to the flar up I’m having of Proctitis that I just can’t seem toget rid off.   What do you have? Hang in there Susan

Hi, I could not help but wonder, does your "Stress" hit when things are not going well re. your gastrointestinal tract? I quite frankly ask the above stated question,as everthinh is fine with me re. stress, until something happens relating to my diseased intestines,THEN I BECOME STRESSED! Sincerely,     Stephen J.    As I learned in school last semester, you can’t stop stress in your life. You can control the environment only so much to reduce stress. But even then you can’t control the people in your life, and others that aren’t in your life but you interact with. And then your mind naturally produces stress for you (worrying, thinking about situations). We learned that you need to learn to manage stress, not block it out. I had gone number of months without any problems and all of a sudden my colitis flares back up and I am back on the evil drug prednizone. Has anyone out there experienced reoccurrence when they have gone through a stressful life period. I just stopped going out with someone and the timing seems more than a coincidence. Jeff

Response:

Funny thing.. I am probably the LEAST stressed out person on the planet and I think my UC shows up for no reason.  Of course there is a stress link there somewhere, I just am not sure what it is in my case…  Perhaps its like what George Carlin used to say about cancer… "Its caused by swalling small amounts of saliva over long periods of time…" Andy

I’ve found that when I’m really stressed out, my GI track suffers.  It’s really important to  work on not letting stress get out of hand. Paty

Hi Jeff; I read your post and can defiantly relate. My Doctor has said that no one is sure if colitis is stress related for sure. I’ve been fighting colitis for 4 years now and have been keeping a journal to do with my life and my colitis. 99% of the time a flare up of colitis follows anything stressful in my life. The specialist upon my last discharge from hospital said "Remember No Stress!!!" This seems to be a joke, I’m a wife, mother, grandmother etc. and I’m sorry but you can’t protect yourself from stress, it happens! I’m so tired of everyone walking around me like they are on egg shells, and hate it when my children feel guilty when a normal childhood problem flares up my colitis and puts me in hospital. Life must go on and Life is stressful.
