CELEBREX and COLITIS?

Question:

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflamatory Drug, NASID mgbio – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > What is an nsaid?

Response:

I’ve been on Celebrex now for at least two years with no problems taking it. I want to add though I was put on it for 30 days to see if there was a problem with it and then taken off it to also see any changes.  There wasn’t any and I still take it for arthritis.  UM MOM Susan

I’ve done a lot of reading of different drugs because of the meds that Jeff is on.  I haven’t read anything these drugs doing this. As for the Celebrex, I can’t take it because I am allergice to sulfas.  Have you ever had a reaction or a sensitivity to drugs with sulfas in them? Celebrex is in a different class of NASIDs, it is a COX II inhibitor.  This class of drugs are considered much safe for IBD patients as it has less GI side effects. This means most IBD patients can tolerate the medication, not all.  You should check with your GI if this medication is right for you. :)  mgbio – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Hello.  Had my first bout of colitis and ended up in the hospital for a few >days.  Very painful and now I’m terrified of it happening again.  Not sure >what caused it.  Catscan showed entire ascending colon inflamed. >Colonoscopy of large intestines clean.  Doc prescribed 1200mg of Asacol 3x >a day – that scares me since I just read about renal failure in patients >taking 1/3 of that dose. >Migraine patient of many years now. There is confolicting evidence about COX-II inhibitors in IBD.  There are just as many studies that show it helps IBD as hurts it, so it’s hard to say. Celebrex is related to sulfa drugs.  A sulfa allergy can mimic or trigger colitis. Thanks, Mike — To reply via email remove the X’s from my email address:

Maybe somebody can correct me if I’m wrongbut I "think" Celebrex is an nsaid. If it is, it could contribute to colitis. I have collagenous colitis and one of the contributing factors is an overuse of nsaids. In my case, I used a lot of advil for arthritis. Can’t take them anymore. Plus, Celebrex gave me terrible insomnia as did Vioxx. As I said, I’m not really sure if Celebrex is an nsaid. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Any help is greatly appreciated.  My email is my username at yahoo dot > com. > Thank you for your help. > Very worried.

I take Celebrex and took long ago Elavil with no problems from the meds. The symptoms you describe sound like a flare or maybe a side effect, hard to tell.  Talk to your GI about these things.  But you say the scope showed inflammation which can be causing your symptoms.  UM MOM Susan

Hello.  Had my first bout of colitis and ended up in the hospital for a few days.  Very painful and now I’m terrified of it happening again.  Not sure what caused it.  Catscan showed entire ascending colon inflamed. Colonoscopy of large intestines clean.  Doc prescribed 1200mg of Asacol 3x a day – that scares me since I just read about renal failure in patients taking 1/3 of that dose. Migraine patient of many years now. Been taking zoloft for 2 years.  Began taking two new meds at about the same time.  10mg of Pamelor (like Elavil) and 200 mg of Celebrex.  Three weeks after starting the new meds, ended up in ER.  Diarrhea and gas (that would not pass). GI said he believes it was bacterial colitis, but blood and stool do not reflect that.  I’m afraid to eat or drink just about anything now for fear of ending up like that again. Does anyone know of celebrex or pamelor causing colitis? Any help is greatly appreciated.  My email is my username at yahoo dot com. Thank you for your help. Very worried.
