Response:

Deb I gues that I should tell you the rest of the story.  My wife had always said how neat it was to go to the hot springs in the winter and sit in the hot water while ice formed in her hair.  After 30+ years of marriage I finally got a chance to try it.  It was kind of neat.  It was a bitterly cold day, extreme grey overcast and some snow.  When it came time to get out of the pool I had some trouble standing up and maintaining my balance.  Just as I managed to stabalize my self (with my son’s help) my bathing suit took a dive for my ankles and I mood a group of german speaking and francophone tourists.  Not an event that any of   us are likely to forget. I wondered about the use of the word vehicle.  At work I once used the word prophalactic, which according to the dictionary means "for the prevention of disease or other misfortunes".  I used it in the latter sense of the word but senior management thought that I  was talking about condoms instead of disk backups.  I one used the expression "dogmatic adherence to internal policies", this time I was informed that dogmatic only refered to Roman Catholics.  I changed dogmatic to fastidious and I was informed that fastidious only refered to persons with a cleanliness fetish and I should go back to dogmatic.  I love the English language but the meagre vocabularies of some people amaze me. Thanx for your note, may it bring a chuckle to your life.  -  Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Sorry Paul but all I can picture is you on the highway sitting on some > lomotil instead of inside a car! ;-) > Debs > My doc reccommends using lomotil as a vehile to enable me to travel.   > The first test worked, 2 tablets as prophilactics at 7:00AM and I > made from Edmonton to Banff before I needed the facilities, took two > more before we left Banff and I made it home.  It’s good stuff but I > don’t use it often. > Paul >>Hi Charles, >>My doc recommended Imodium A-D and it works great.  e also recommended >>Questran,  When I don’t take the Questran the Imodium does a fine job. >>Still have the Lomotil as an emergency. >>Connie >>>I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea. >>>My doc doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk >>>for a bowel obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not >>>even over the counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I >>>don’t know if they are contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

Hi Charles, My doc recommended Imodium A-D and it works great.  e also recommended Questran,  When I don’t take the Questran the Imodium does a fine job. Still have the Lomotil as an emergency. Connie – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea. > My doc doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk > for a bowel obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not > even over the counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I > don’t know if they are contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

My doc reccommends using lomotil as a vehile to enable me to travel.   The first test worked, 2 tablets as prophilactics at 7:00AM and I made from Edmonton to Banff before I needed the facilities, took two more before we left Banff and I made it home.  It’s good stuff but I don’t use it often. Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi Charles, >My doc recommended Imodium A-D and it works great.  e also recommended >Questran,  When I don’t take the Questran the Imodium does a fine job. >Still have the Lomotil as an emergency. >Connie >I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea. >My doc doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk >for a bowel obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not >even over the counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I >don’t know if they are contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea.  My doc doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk for a bowel obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not even over the counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I don’t know if they are contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

My dr’s have me take something when I am in multiple trips mode or have to go out of the house for a long long period of time.  I never had any problem with it.  UM MOM Susan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea.  My doc > doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk for a bowel > obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not even over the > counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I don’t know if they are > contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

Charles – I’ve been taking Lomotil for my diarrhea for 35 yrs now with no ill effects.  The one med though that has really done the trick for me is Colestid.  It helps firm up the stool which in turn eliminates alot of the diarrhea.  You may want to ask your dr about it – it requires a prescription. Hugs,  Linda – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have found that Lomotil is effective in controlling the diarrhea.  My doc > doesn’t like me to take it though.  I think it puts me at risk for a bowel > obstruction.  I don’t take any anti-diarrhea drugs not even over the > counter.  Many times I think about doing this but I don’t know if they are > contraindicated in Chron’s Disease.

Response:

I use Lomotil regularly.   It doesn’t make me  any more tired than I normally feel.    I always feel a bit draggy due to the crohn’s, but haven’t noticed any relation to the med.  It has worked wonders for me.  For your own safety, though… you may want to try it on a weekend first.  Good luck!

Response:

I have used Lomotil and always have it around.  Generally I use Questran and Imodium when necessary, but in those dire situations the Lomotil does the trick.  I have not had any serious side effects.  First few times I got a bit drowsy but that went away quickly. i tried lomotil, it made me soooooo nauseated. you may want to ask your doctor about lotronex, i was on it for awhile then they took it off the market. it worked soooooooooo well for predominant diarrhea symptoms for IBS. now it is back on the market, but many pharmacies have to order it for the specific patient. i have tried them all, haha any questions? -mari -> Path: tor-nn1.netcom.ca!tor-nx1.netcom.ca!news.maxwell.syr.edu! in.100proofnews.com!in.100proofnews.com!prodigy.com!newsmst01.news.prodigy. com! prodigy.com!postmaster.news.prodigy.com!newssvr31.news.prodigy.com.POSTED! e526535b!not-for-mail -> Newsgroups: alt.support.crohns-colitis -> X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 1.91/32.564 -> MIME-Version: 1.0 -> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii -> Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -> Lines: 5 -> NNTP-Posting-Host: 64.252.96.189 -> X-Trace: newssvr31.news.prodigy.com 1062389892 ST000 64.252.96.189 (Mon, 01 Sep 2003 00:18:12 EDT) -> Organization: SBC http://yahoo.sbc.com -> X-UserInfo1: [[^D^JVUC[[LJKD]_LAPJYZTBMV [0;1;40;36mLWQHBATBTSUBYFWEAE -> Xref: tor-nx1.netcom.ca alt.support.crohns-colitis:279532 -> -> Has anyone use Lomotil and had good luck with it?  And does it make -> you drowsy?  I can’t be sleepy on my job; I drive between 80 – 100 -> miles a day with clients in the vehicle.  Thank God for this group. -> You can’t exactly explain this to the average person, and have them -> understand.    Nora

Hi Nora, I have been on lomotil since January and it doesn’t make me drowsy. I take it twice a day, once in the AM, and once at night, and to me its been a real lifesaver. Hi Nora,  I’ve been using Lomotil for years and it works great for me.  I’ve had to up the dose over the years as my "D" is getting worse but it never fails to work.  :o)  We drive 5 hrs to get to our lake place and when I take this I usually can get away without stopping or maybe just once.  Its helped me have a more normal life.   :o ) Sherry

Response:

Hi Nora, I’ve been prescribed Lomotil probably half a dozen times since I developed Crohns – I don’t need to use it all the time,  but I tend to have some in the house/handbag permently.  Personally, it seems to have a positive effect on me.  I work in front a computer all day, so it would be easy to get sleepy if it was going to affect me that way, but it doesn’t seem to.  I don’t know about other people though.  If you give it a go, good luck. Anything that helps is always a bonus. Neet.

Hi Everyone, I haven’t been around for a while, but I have been really stressed out with moving again and I ended up getting really sick…lots of blood and bloody mucus being produced and uncontrollable runs.  I finally got myself a specialist here and she doubled my pentasa and dicetel for now until I get approved for Remicade.  She also prescribed Lomotil and it hasn’t worked at all to calm down the runs.  I am wondering if I am doing something wrong…I was taking 2 every four hours at first and I was still having watery bowel movements with worse cramps.  Even when I didn’t have anything left, I still had cramps that only produced mucus and blood.  I have pretty much given up on taking the Lomotil regularly, but I am wondering if it takes time to build up in your system or something.  Does anyone have any advice about this? Right now I only have peppermint herbal tea during the day, or plain water and about 6 social tea biscuits.  I have dinner when I get home and it usually consists of one serving of protein and one serving of easily digestible starch, like white rice or pasta.  In order to eat dinner, I have to take two Tylenol ones….it doesn’t totally get rid of the pain, but it helps to dull it a little.  Even with this restricted diet of things that I tolerate well, I feel like absolute crap.  I have had a low grade fever and have been consistently passing blood for over a month.  How much blood do you have to lose before it becomes an issue?  I find that I am dizzy almost all of the time and today, I was having heart palpitations at work.  Thank God I have a desk job or I wouldn’t be able to work at all right now. Anyways, I should get to bed…I know that I will be up with the runs in the middle of the night, so I have to try to get as much rest in as I can. *tired out* Ann

Response:

Hi Ann!  How long ago was it that you saw the gi?  The blood has me quite concerned.   When that happened to me I ended up in the hospital with a transfusion.  Bleeding is not good and needs to be attended to now.  It could be that the Pentasa isn’t working for you.  I take Pentasa but I don’t have this kind of flare while I have been on it except once and then I was put on Pred for three weeks.  I don’t know anything about the lomotil.  I use tincture of opium for diarrhea and it works fabulously for me.  For pain, Vicodans now when needed but had a durgesic patch before my surgery in Sept.   If you want to chat feel free to email me.  This addy is correct and useable.  It’s really early so I am not quite ‘awake’ yet.  Good to see you back here but so very sorry you are feeling so bad.  UM MOM Susan
