Response:

Yes, make sure you take calcium and vitamin D. Watch your salt intake and drink lots of water. I hated the tapering off of it most. Aful headaches. Holly

Response:

It has been 5 years since I last used prednisone, but  I will never forget the horrible side effects.  I suffered severe insomnia, hair loss, impotence, and wild mood swings, as well as, occasional loss of voice. Tom

Response:

Make sure he gives you Calcium and vitamin D tablets to combat bone problems. My consultant does, but my GP didn’t until I asked. Geoff

Thought I would keep you informed, I was on High doses of preds over a long period of time and because of it my adrenal glands stopped working.  So my body is unable to produce its own steroids, which as we all know you need to live.  This is called Addisons disease, it is an extremly rare disease and side effect.  But its nice to have all the facts.  No-one informed me of anything before I started the preds.  Also again over a long peroid of time you will need your bone marrow checked. Good luck, and if you do go on them, I hope you dont turn phycotic on us :) Julie

Response:

your doctor should have you come off rather quickly like 2 months maximum; longer than that he doesnt know what he is doing for there are other ways to attempt to control it without such severe side effects long term

As others have already responded, it’s a very effective treatment if you follow your doctor’s instructions. Be sure to take the warnings about side effects to heart, though, especially about mood swings at higher dosage levels. That one always catches me off guard — I tend to get a little irritable when I’m on high doses of Prednisone, but my wife usually notices it well before I acknowledge it ;)

Response:

Another side effect is bone loss.  I’m 28 years old and was on low doses of pred for less than two years and recently had a bone scan which showed serious bone loss.  A friend of mine was on pred for six months (for a skin disease) and also suffered bone loss.  We’re both taking fosomax now.  The good news is that bone scans are an easy test and there are medications available to treat bone loss, especially if you catch it early. My doctor wants to put me on Prednisone, but I am reluctant, given all of its side effects.  I want to know of anyone’s experiences with Prednisone, and whether it is recommended as a useful treatment or not. Thanks!

Response:

Of course it is an effective treatment. Most of us wouldn’t touch it if it weren’t. Follow your Dr’s instructions to the letter, and you should be OK. It is when people are on high dosages for long times that serious problems become likely. A short term (less than 2 months, say) regime may not be a wonderful experience, but isn’t likely to harm you either. Prednisone is probably the single most effective medication available, and sometimes the only one that works. Boyd — "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity."
