lactoferrin / iron ?

Question:

Funny you should post this article now. I found it a few days ago and have been taking Lactoferrin for two days now. Although I have not found the apolactoferrin or reduced iron lactoferrin in my local healthfood stores I am taking regular lactoferrin. Anyhow I can obtain the reduced iron form over the internet if necessary. In addition to the iron binding properties, I am particulary interested in lactoferrins induction of IL-4 and IL-10 which are the same cytokines that the helminthic worm eggs induce, this will hopefully lower the th1via upregulation of th2. I will give this about 10 days to see if there is any change in my UC then will also start IP-6 an oral iron chelator to check its effects. I have been researching UC for the past 20 or so years and there is a definate Iron connection.   UC class of 1980 Mike F

Lactoferrin is the premiere iron binder in the body. It is the first line of defense the immune system of the body. It resides in all the ’slime’ in our bodies and when the body is attacked by an invader the lactoferrin binds up iron to remove it from the enemy / invader .. weakens it (virus , cancer , bacteria thrive on iron) and the T-cells can kill it in its’ weakened state. When the lactoferrin is saturated it is useless to fight the invader. It has been shown it is the most effective in the fight against the most common acquired hospital infection. I wonder if it is binding iron in this article ..? Togawa J, Nagase H, Tanaka K, Inamori M, Umezawa T, Nakajima A, Naito M, Sato S, Saito T, Sekihara H Third Department of Internal Medicine, Yokohama City University School of Medicine, Yokohama 236-0004, Japan. [Medline record in process] Natural immunomodulator lactoferrin is known to exert an anti-inflammatory effect. However, there have been no studies that examine the mode of action of lactoferrin in reducing intestinal damage. We investigated the effect of lactoferrin on a trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis model in rats. Bovine lactoferrin was given once daily through gavage, starting 3 days before (preventive mode) or just after TNBS administration (treatment mode) until death. The distal colon was removed to be examined. Colitis was attenuated by lactoferrin via both modes in a dose-dependent manner, as reflected by improvement in macroscopic and histological scores and myeloperoxidase activity. Lactoferrin caused significant induction of the anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-10, significant reductions in the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha and IL-1beta, and downregulation of the nuclear factor-kappaB pathway. We concluded that lactoferrin exerts a protective effect against colitis in rats via modulation of the immune system and correction of cytokine imbalance. Lactoferrin has potential as a new therapeutic agent for inflammatory bowel disease. PMID: 12065306, UI: 22060218 —— Who loves ya.
