Inflammatory bowel disease

Question:

I have  inflammatory bowel disease and am on prednisone for it.  The pred should realy bring the cat out of the flare – ask the vet to mess with the dosage – people vary from 5 mg to 60 mg to control the disease.  During a flare, you can get full nutrition by liquifying whatever you need.  I once put a poached chicken breast in the blender with a little chicken broth. If that’s too much trouble (it was for me) add a raw egg to just about anything.  Like milk if she can digest it.  Get no-lactose milk from the supermarket.  The blended chicken breast is really what the baby food is. I don’t suppose she’d like jello.  There is a nutritional supplement called Ensure which was developed for digestive disorders  without milk but it comes in people flavors such as vanilla.  Drug stores have it. Worth a shot – she may think it’s ice cream.  Post to your local Colitis or Crohns bulletin board and see what they come up with.  I’ll bet you can blend well-cooked stew meat…

Response:

Oh yeah, and why flagyl?  It’s usually prescribed in people for infected fistulas, since it targets anaerobic bacteria.  May have a special function in cats.

Response:

Addition to the same post – one of my cats trid to drink my vanilla Ensure this morning, so cats probably like it fine.

Response:

Any advice for an older cat with inflammatory bowel disease? We were given prednisone and flagyl and are waiting to see if that works.  The worst problem is our cat is constantly eating (he meows for food all the time) but he’s not absorbing the nutrients from the food and is wasting away.

Response:

Pred and flagyl has helped my older cat a lot for almost 2 years.  Someone else on this group recently suggested Kaopectate.  Make sure your cat has had a blood test to be sure that the thyroid is not the problem. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Any advice for an older cat with inflammatory bowel disease? >We were given prednisone and flagyl and are waiting to see >if that works.  The worst problem is our cat is constantly eating >(he meows for food all the time) but he’s not absorbing the >nutrients from the food and is wasting away.

My 14 year old is on prednisone for inflammatory bowel syndrome.  She went through a battery of tests last year only to find there is no known cause. I have been ‘managing’ her disease for over a year now.  There is no cure. She is also wasting away.  She only weighs about 5 pounds, down from 10 pounds a little over a year ago.  Her coat is unkempt and she looks like a skeleton with fur.  However, she is in good spirits and doesn’t seem to be in any pain. I supplement her cat food with tuna and meat flavored baby food.  She really likes them a lot.  I give her tuna every few days.  I give her baby food every day, as much as she wants.  (Beware, however, that if you have other cats they will also want the baby food.  I have 5 other cats, 4 of which get the baby food also.)  The baby food habit may become quite expensive as I go through anywhere from 3-8 jars per day and they cost about .69 for each jar. Good luck to you and your kitty! Regards, Patty
