anxiety/depression
Question:
Hi, Does anyone with anxiety and depression who also suffer from crohns or ulcerative colitis, also suffer from obsessional thoughts (a symptom of obsessional compulsive disorder but also common in anxiety and depression) and ideas e.g. bad thoughts that you can’t get off your mind no matter how you try, i only found out about it recently, and was complete turmoil- guilt, fear of going crazy)a for 4 1/2 years until i found out many people suffer from this. This was such a turning point for me and i now know and believe i am recovering from both of these illnesses, ulcerative colitis, which i have suffered from 4 years without remission – i think because of the severe anxiety, and the depression and anxiety. I will never give up, and once i get better, i will help other people with all my heart! Thanks for listening Anthony

hi anthony no not obsessive compulsive (except the need to have lots of toilet paper around <g>) but depression and anxiety and its related to 1) ibd itself and 2) the meds there are chemical changes in you during bad bouts..for one thing..not to mention the simple (not so simple really ) psychological impact of having a chronic illness which is unknown and unrecognized as "cool to have" in our society… and the meds…prednisone will make some people very very anxious..some people get depressed on it (personally ..i get wicked high..and thats not good either..cos when the dose is coming down..i crash) sulfa which i am allergic to but was put on initially..made me terribly antsy..(the hives and throwing up didnt help any)…and shaky loperamide makes me feel in a bad mood dipentum..well it has a lot of similar stuff to sulfa…i feel moody.depressed anxious remember your blood chemistry is off…your sugar is off…your body is messed up..thats a lot of it and at least for women..i bet for men..there is some hormonal interplay..i know someone on here discussed this before..i used to get horribly worse ibd during my period..now in menopause thanks to an emergency hyst years ago..i still notice a hormonal interplay…i bet men have it too. so dont feel like you are alone or going nutty you are not alone going nutty? well if you are…most of us are too…<g> hang in there…try to treat your mind and body together if you can…you are NOT weirded out…ibd does a lot of stuff other than make us have to go ..bleed…be in pain ..have bruises ..hurting joints…etc etc etc…they dont know how much it does to the rest of our bodies..but any disease like this can do a lot take care.. get some support…counseling will help IF the counselor knows about ibd but you will do ok just being around this board..we all have some form of it..or have family with some form of it…and we are all here for you ‘ love to you from boston mass annie

hi mike i am not exaggerating..as for it being caused by the meds..yes..i am afraid it is.. sometimes you can learn a lot reading the pdr…i used to have a freebie cos my mother was a nurse and would send me the last year’s copy to be honest..i would rather know that its the meds and not myself going loony ..but as a trained counseling psychologist i also tend to look first for medical issues.as causes of certain psychological issues eg ..one of the first things i ever learned as a psych intern in a state hospital was that a heretofore unexplained depression can be a sign of cancer…not depression from the knowledge of having cancer..the patient doesnt even know…its a sign simply… they dont know quite why …but early cancer "causes" a depressed state… as for "exaggerating’.. when i joke around on here…thats one thing when i am writing something like this which is serious..i neither joke nor exaggerate.. i have had this ibd long enough..probably since childhood..and dx in 1978…and have done enough research to know at least for myself..what certain meds do..i dont research them before something happens..i trust the doctor to have done that..but they cannot ..even with a pdr..know how one or another individual will react to something my sulfa allergy i inherited from my dad..but didnt know i had it before..cos i had never been treated with it for anything… as for the pred…read your pdr..or even the little paperback drug books you can get in your pharmacy..pred is a steroid and they can cause opposite reactions in different people…but being ‘high" is one of the more common results…mood swings too..all steroids do that…the crap that athletes illegally take..pred..and other steroids…its simply the bad part of the good that pred can do…its why so many people on here get hungry on pred too…tho i have met people who totally lost their appetites on it. annie in boston (very calm ..no pred)..

I think you’re exagerating a little on your side effects, I don’t think it’s the meds causing all that. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > hi anthony > no not obsessive compulsive (except the need to have lots of toilet paper > around <g>) > but depression and anxiety > and its related to 1) ibd itself and 2) the meds > there are chemical changes in you during bad bouts..for one thing..not to > mention the simple (not so simple really ) psychological impact of having a > chronic illness which is unknown and unrecognized as "cool to have" in our > society… > and the meds…prednisone will make some people very very anxious..some > people get depressed on it (personally ..i get wicked high..and thats not > good either..cos when the dose is coming down..i crash) > sulfa which i am allergic to but was put on initially..made me terribly > antsy..(the hives and throwing up didnt help any)…and shaky > loperamide makes me feel in a bad mood > dipentum..well it has a lot of similar stuff to sulfa…i feel > moody.depressed anxious > remember your blood chemistry is off…your sugar is off…your body is > messed up..thats a lot of it > and at least for women..i bet for men..there is some hormonal interplay..i > know someone on here discussed this before..i used to get horribly worse ibd > during my period..now in menopause thanks to an emergency hyst years ago..i > still notice a hormonal interplay…i bet men have it too. > so dont feel like you are alone or going nutty > you are not alone > going nutty? > well if you are…most of us are too…<g> > hang in there…try to treat your mind and body together if you can…you > are NOT weirded out…ibd does a lot of stuff other than make us have to go > ..bleed…be in pain ..have bruises ..hurting joints…etc etc etc…they > dont know how much it does to the rest of our bodies..but any disease like > this can do a lot > take care.. > get some support…counseling will help IF the counselor knows about ibd > but you will do ok just being around this board..we all have some form of > it..or have family with some form of it…and we are all here for you ‘ > love to you from boston mass > annie
